Metamaterials/Special Materials
Numerous materials exist that have unusual or frequency dependent properties. Using Remcom’s XFdtd software, simulations of devices containing these special materials may be performed.
Metamaterials include such items as negative index materials, electronic band gap structures and frequency selective surfaces. Special materials include frequency dependent models, anisotropic and ferrite materials, and computational extensions to the FDTD method such as sub-cellular thin wires and time-dependent switches.

Examples
This example demonstrates the ability of XFdtd to simulate dielectric materials with off-diagonal terms in the permittivity tensor. The case in point here is the computation of bistatic radar cross section from an anisotropic sphere excited by a plane wave.
Since XFdtd includes frequency-dependent dielectric and magnetic materials, it is capable of making three-dimensional calculations for double negative materials, also called negative index materials and metamaterials.
A microstrip gap waveguide containing a mushroom-type EBG surface is simulated in XFdtd and compared to measured results.
A multiband frequency selective surface is built using a ternary tree loop and modified tripole in order to block multiple frequency bands. Simulation using periodic boundaries in XFdtd demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed structure.
A comparison of the reflection and transmission characteristics from double-ringed periodic structures is made between XF and measurements. This example was provided courtesy of Kanazawa Institute of Technology.
An anisotropic magnetized ferrite material is used in a microstrip circulator to isolate one port while providing output to the other.
An EBG reflector is used to improve the performance of a spiral antenna.
